Well, first of all... this first term went by so fast! It's crazy how classes are just 10 weeks long. There's seriously very little room to slack off because the classes keep moving at a rapid pace. But, I do like only having classes 4 days a week. I had a relatively easy time with my classes: Freshman Inquiry, Intro to Business, and Intro to Statistics. For the most part, I liked all of them, but school is school... and I'm still gonna dread it! :P
My freshman inquiry class ended up not being what I expected it to be. It's theme is "Design & Society," so I assumed we'd be doing cool, artsy things while talking about our own society and culture in current times. Instead, we spent lots of time learning about poverty in Africa and how we can improve their situation. Yeah, definitely a big contrast from what I was expecting. For fall, our specific theme was "Design for Malawi," and now I can understand what my professor means by design & society. We did kind of artsy things like build windmills and create designs of ways to better life in Malawi, but they were more engineer-y things. It was my least favorite class of the term. It was a little over an hour long, but it always felt so long. My professor would spend a lot of time talking or trying to engage group discussion. I was really excited for this class; now, it's just kinda ehhh.
My favorite class ended up being my Intro to Business class. My professor is very passionate and knowledgeable about what she teaches. At first, I was intimidated of her, but she's a wonderful professor. I liked how the class was structured: read chapter, next class, get lectured and quizzed about chapter. It was straight forward and easy to follow. In addition to lecturing about the chapter, my professor would always have some kind of story or life experience related to what we are learning which made the concepts easy to understand and the lectures not so boring. I was nervous about having a term-long group project, but I ended up with a team of great people that were fun and easy to work with. We were all from different places with different situation that made things interesting. I'd have to say our group was pretty amazing--we got 100% on our final plan and won our class business plan competition. For my personal achievement, I got 100% on the midterm, and when I turned in my final exam, my professor told me I'm the top of my class :)
My last class--Statistics--wasn't the most exciting class, but it was still good. The class was laaarge, and the professor was extremely lenient. He dropped everyone's lowest two quiz scores. After taking Calculus in high school, Statistics is really boring to me. One of the major plus sides to this professor is that he always let class out early! I don't know if I would have been able to handle two hours of math at a time. Since the class was so large, it was easy to slack off and not pay attention. Sometimes, I caught myself tuning out.. oops. But, I still did well in the class!
I got my first job ever at school, which is pretty exciting. It's an easy, work-study job, but still. :P I like that I have flexible hours and that I can work on homework when there is no actual work for me to do. I'm glad that I can keep this job as long as I attend PSU.
The fact that my first term of college was pretty easy for me makes me nervous for future terms. I think--no, I know--next term will be more difficult with another class and more work hours during the week. It's just a small jump because my extra class is online, but it'll still be time consuming! I'm just glad to be done and on winter break. I'll worry about next term when it comes ;)
